Manchester United claimed their first trophy of the Jose Mourinho era as Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s late goal secured a 2-1 win over Premier League champions Leicester City in the Community Shield.
Leicester threatened first, with Jamie Vardy twisting into the penalty area, only for Daley Blind to get the ball away from him.
Five minutes later, United came close when Anthony Martial cut into the area from the left and, from a narrow angle, shot into the side-netting.
Wayne Rooney sent a header straight at Kasper Schmeichel from a deflected Luke Shaw cross, but Leicester were within a whisker of going in front with 20 minutes played when a Shinji Okazaki header from a corner came back off the bar.
But the breakthrough arrived in style just after the half-hour mark when Jesse Lingard embarked on a run, evaded a Wes Morgan challenge and fired home to give the FA Cup winners the lead.
Leicester were back level on 52 minutes when Marouane Fellaini’s poor backpass allowed Vardy to go around David De Gea before slotting home.
Ibrahimovic had the chance to restore United’s lead on 79 minutes when Rooney diverted the ball back to him in the area, but he was unable to make clean contact with the shot and Danny Drinkwater was able to clear.
At the other end, an off-balance Ahmed Musa headed over the bar from close range from Robert Huth’s flick.
On 83 minutes, Ibrahimovic made it 2-1, heading in off the inside of the post from Antonio Valencia’s cross.
Leicester battled back and saw a late penalty appeal waved away, but United came away with victory.
