If you are in the process of moving to a smaller space, there are many things to consider when making that transition. It can be tough to suddenly have less space to put all your stuff, but with the right decisions, you’ll be happy you’ve made the smaller space and likely, are paying less for it. Consider Matco for your moving and storage choices.

1) Take note of what you use the most.

Often times we purchase and hold onto something with the best of intentions and then never use it. If you are downsizing, it’s time to take a good hard look at what you actually use in your home. For the items you realize you no longer use and don’t need, give them away or mark them as being part of a future garage sale. Take the same assessment of furniture as well.

2) Measure the space of your future home.

Make sure you measure the rooms of your future home as well as closet space, the kitchen and windows. This will help you figure out what you should take with you, put in storage or sell in a garage sale. You will have a better idea of how an item of furniture will look in a new space and whether or not you should take it with you.

3) Tackle one room at a time.

The best approach when figuring out what to give away or sell, what to keep and what you are willing to put into storage, is to take on one room at a time. Start with the most cluttered and work your way around the house. In each room, take a look at the largest pieces of furniture, extra junk and clutter, and anything you notice you don’t use. Label things with stickers that you’d like to keep, donate or sell, or put in storage.

4) Get rid of duplicate items.

If you have two side tables and only have room for one, sell or donate the other. Take stock of the items in your home you have multiples of and get rid of the extras. Be strict with yourself about this and be ready to get rid of things even if you think you may need the other. Remember, you don’t have the space for as much anymore.

5) Choose furniture that also moonlights as storage space.
