The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has extended by one year the tenure of the party’s caretaker committee led by Senator Ahmed Makarfi.
The decision was taken after a meeting of top party members including governors and senators at the government house in Port Harcourt, Rivers state.
Makarfi’s tenure was extended by the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party and given 12 months within which to organise the convention. The NEC includes the party’s board of trustees, the PDP governors, the National Assembly party caucus, the national caucus, the 36 state PDP chairmen and national officers of the party.
Ike Ekweremadu, deputy Senate president as well as Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers state endorsed the decision and moved that the caretaker committee should continue to remain in office.
Other members of the party supported the motion agreeing that the convention be moved to at least three months from now. The party proposes that it would use the extended period to continue to negotiate with Ali Modu Sheriff, the ousted chairman of the party who is currently in court to take back his position.
At the time of this report, all the party leaders had returned to the state government house for further discussions.
